Dear Pet Parent,
Well it seems we are in a perpetual summer season. Yet, the body knows that we should be transitioning into autumn. Autumn is an exciting season of abundance and contraction. This is the time of the year to harvest the fruits of our labor and prepare storing up food and fuel for the winter season. The foods we eat and feed our pets should reflect this inward nature, meaning we should focus more on roots, root vegetables,
seeds and fruits abundant during this season. It's best to supplement with foods that have astringent properties like cherries and offer less raw or uncooked summer vegetables.
Foods should be prepared through baking or sautéing, using less water, cooking at a lower heat for longer periods of time (ie. roasted veggies, chicken, etc.)
Fall tends to be a dry season and therefore results in increased dryness within the body. The lungs are said to "open" to the nose, while the mist of the lungs keeps the skin moist. Therefore, in an unbalanced pet, we will tend to see dryness reflected around the skin of the nose, lips and hair (increased shedding at this time of year is known as the 2nd shedding). We see this more in cats than dogs, especially the
thinner cats with chronic respiratory conditions. In dogs, the problem tends to be in the brachycephalic breeds (Chinese Pugs, Boston Terriers, Bull Dogs) mostly due to open mouth breathing.
Foods to help moisten internal dryness:
Almonds, pine nuts, apples (home made apple sauce) pears, barley, millet, eggs, clams, mussels, herring or pork (you can use a little salt in the cooking to help moisten the dryness).
Best Foods to feed or supplement during the Fall:
Seaweeds : Kombu, kelp, sea vegetables, herbs - nettles - (dried seaweeds can be purchased at Health food stores and Asian markets and cooked into any meal).
Vegetables: Carrots, winter squash, pumpkin, broccoli, turnips, parsley, watercress, wheat or barley grass, blue green or micro algae, mushrooms, garlic, ginger
Fruits: Apples and Pears
Grains/Carbs: Sweet potatoes, oats, brown rice, quinoa, barley, corn. (Recommended to add 2 1/2 cups of water for each cup of grain. May need to soak grains overnight prior to cooking or use flake or cracked grains to increase digestibility. While we do not recommend feeding many grains to our pets, if there is ever a season for grains, it is this one. It may be best to alternate meals, some with grains and some
without. If you decide to use grains, we recommend ancient grains such as quinoa, amaranth, millet, etc.
