The holidays are in full swing and we are counting our blessings!
In a world where corporations are infringing
and monopolizing the veterinary medical world, I am so thankful to be able to stand alone, practicing holistic health care the way I have always dreamed.
This overwhelming gratefulness really hit me when I came across some upsetting news in an article on one of our veterinary information sites.
Oh my stars... look what Mars Inc. has
done!
Mars Inc. the corporation that owns Pedigree, Royal Canin, Nutro, Cesar, Beneful, Whiskas, and of course, several candy companies, not only owns all Banfield Veterinary Hospitals but has recently acquired the VCA (Veterinary Centers of America) hospitals. This recent deal now gives Mars ownership of over 2,000 veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada. This large corporation buying out
another large corporation gives Mars ownership of 10% of the veterinary market!
In the article mentioned above, one of the greatest concerns was : "the likelihood of higher prices for pet owners and lower quality specialty and emergency services." This is not fair to pet owners and to those already struggling to pay for veterinary care! The consequences of which will lead to increased euthanasia for those
who cannot afford proper treatment.
Another frightening concern is the widespread rigid vaccine protocols already put in place by Banfield Animal Hospitals. Banfield's current vaccination protocol is disgusting. They vaccinate as frequently as every 6 months, pushing non core vaccines on every patient regardless of the pet's age, lifestyle, geographical region and/or current illness.This means their patients receive anywhere from
7-10 vaccine per year!
When I was an ER veterinarian in Atlanta, I treated vaccine reactions every evening from the local Banfield clinic and that was over 14 years ago! Their recent protocols are even more aggressive!
Also there is the danger that one company owning this much of the veterinary market will have a strong voice and influence in every aspect
of veterinary medicine.
Reading this article made me sick to my stomach, but it also reminded me of why I do what I do.
My desire is to protect the original essence of veterinary medicine, in which our profession focused on treating illnesses rather than creating them through excessive use of vaccines, chemicals and long term
prescriptions.
I have always had a desire to treat each patient individually, as my own, while teaching my clients about proactive medicine, rather than reactive medicine. With my ultimate goal being to bring healing and longevity, improving every pets' quality of life, treating the underlying root cause, not merely covering up the symptoms, and restoring health in hopes of preventing
emergencies.
I could never do this without you, my wonderful clients. You are seeking out proactive care for your pets and have become enlightened to the dangers of the conventional standards in the veterinary industry today. Also, in the current age of "internet vets" and the overwhelming amount of information online and products available, you choose to support a local, family owned
business.
